How to check whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name your business

Updated on 11 October 2026

You can find out yourself whether AI assistants recommend your business. It takes about half an hour and needs only a browser. What matters is to ask the questions the way your customers would.

Step by step

  1. Write down five to ten questions a customer could ask, such as “Who is the best physiotherapist in Graz?”, “Can you recommend an electrician in Linz?” or “Which restaurant in Salzburg has the best reviews?”. Vary the wording. Customers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland usually ask in German, so test in the language your customers use.
  2. Ask each question at ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, each time in a new chat.
  3. For each answer, note which businesses are named and whether yours is among them, with the assistant, the date and the wording of the question.
  4. Count: in how many of the answers do you appear? That share is your starting value.
  5. Repeat this on another day. That shows how stable the result is.

Typical mistakes

  • Asking for your own name. “What do you know about Physio Lindner?” tests whether the assistant knows you, not whether it recommends you. Customers who do not know you yet ask about the trade and the place.
  • Asking only one question. The answer depends on the wording, and a single answer is a random snapshot.
  • Testing in your own account. Saved chats, settings and location can colour the answers. A fresh chat or a private window is the better test.
  • Reading the result as a ranking. The assistants do not keep fixed rankings. The order within an answer is not your place.

How to read the result

  • Your share: in how many of the answers do you appear?
  • The competitors: who is named when you are missing, and at which assistant?
  • The differences: does one assistant name you and another not? That suggests the second one’s sources show something different from your details elsewhere.

Then look at the businesses named instead of you: which reviews, pages and directory entries do they have? That gives you concrete starting points. Measures are in How does ChatGPT come to recommend my business?.

The same thing, automatically

Nennquote takes this manual work off your hands: it asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity several typical customer questions about your trade and your town, works out your share and shows who is named instead. The first scan is free. In the paid plans the scan runs every week and you see the history. Answers vary, so Nennquote shows shares rather than single hits, and it does not promise a placement.
